Introduction to Black History Month

Mentor James Robinson kicked off the celebration of Black History Month at River City YouthBuild. Students learned about and were reminded of the various famous African Americans throughout history. One of the persons mentioned, Carter G. Woodson, was a Harvard graduate and historian who launched the celebration of “Negro History Week,” the precursor of Black History Month, in February 1926.
After learning more about the origin of Black History Month, students were tasked with researching two famous African Americans to present to their peers: one from the list below and another of their own choosing.
