YouthBuild Learns about Water Quality and Rain Gardens

On a sunny day, YouthBuild students learned about rain gardens and their effects on water quality

Sara Hallas, a Coastal Education Coordinator for the North Carolina Coastal Federation, facilitated a lesson that included sources of pollution, natural and artificial ways to increase water quality, and how a rain garden improves its surroundings. Students then stepped outside to perform maintenance on the rain garden next to the YouthBuild Center. With the help of Ms. Hallas, students were able to identify the various plants that made the garden and their role in improving water quality.
